High-speed wireless communications using lasers By Dr. Yoshihisa Takayama (Professor, Tokai University) Contents: In recent years, high-speed wireless communication has become indispensable to support various activities, and free-space optical communication using lasers that is one of the wireless technologies has attracted much attention. Both light and radio waves used for wireless communication are a type of electromagnetic wave, but the characteristics of optical communication systems are very different from those of radio wave communication. In this presentation, the features of free-space optical communication technology will be introduced and the current status of research and development will be shared. Brief history of the speaker: Earned Ph. D. at Hokkaido University in 1998 and joined the National Institute of Information Communications Technology (NICT) in 1999. Temporarily became a member of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) from 2004 to conduct inter-satellite laser communication demonstrations and returned to NICT in 2007. Moved from NICT to Tokai University in 2015 as a professor. Current research interests are free-space laser communications, holography, and computational electromagnetics.
